Research vs. Prosthetics Use Cases

Robotics Research

Mount on a robot arm via the M6 adapter plate. Use the JSON protocol to control individual fingers at 10 Hz. Record manipulation demonstrations for imitation learning. The human-scale kinematics produce natural grasp patterns.

Prosthetics Development

The Revo II is a certified prosthetic device with EMG-based control. Researchers working on neural interfaces can use the 2 built-in EMG electrodes or connect the optional 8-channel armband for higher-resolution signal capture.

BCI / EMG Research

Stream raw EMG data alongside finger position commands for brain-computer interface experiments. The BLE connection enables wireless EMG capture while the hand operates untethered.

BCI / EMG Integration

The Revo II supports multiple EMG input methods for controlling the hand via muscle signals.

Built-In EMG Electrodes

Two surface EMG electrodes on the socket detect forearm muscle activity. The onboard classifier maps EMG patterns to predefined grip modes (power grasp, pinch, point, etc.).

8-Channel Armband

Optional BrainCo armband provides 8 EMG channels at 200 Hz. Higher spatial resolution enables more grip pattern classifications and proportional finger control.

EMG Training Data

Record paired EMG-to-finger-position datasets for training custom classifiers. The SVRC data platform stores EMG episodes alongside robotic manipulation data in the same session.

Robot Arm Mounting

The Revo II can be mounted on robot arms as a dexterous end-effector using a custom adapter plate.

Adapter Plate

SVRC provides a 3D-printable adapter plate (STL available) that converts the Revo II prosthetic socket to an M6 bolt pattern compatible with OpenArm 101, UR, and Kinova flanges.

Wireless Control

Use BLE for wireless control when mounted on a robot arm. No cable routing through the arm needed. The BLE range (~10 m) is sufficient for tabletop manipulation setups.

Combined Data Streams

The brainco_revo_agent registers the hand in the same Fearless Platform session as the arm. Joint state from both devices is synchronized in a single JSONL episode.

Precision Dexterous Hand

The Revo II bridges prosthetics and robotics -- its actuation profile matches human hand kinematics closely, making it an ideal end-effector for embodied AI and teleoperation research.

Dexterous Manipulation

Per-finger position control (0.0-1.0 normalized) with thumb 2-DOF and four 1-DOF fingers. 0.4x rotation coupling on thumb.

Piano / Keyboard Actuation

Built-in piano mode with 4-phase press timing (extend 20 ms, drive 30 ms, hold, retract 20 ms). Concurrent multi-finger presses supported.

Teleoperation End-Effector

Transport-agnostic JSON protocol works identically over USB-CDC (115200 baud) and BLE GATT. Attach to any robot arm as a dexterous end-effector.

Data Collection

Record finger position + EMG episodes at 10 Hz. The SVRC platform stores paired EMG-motor data for training grasp classifiers and manipulation policies.

Published Research Using BrainCo Platforms

BrainCo hardware has been used in peer-reviewed publications spanning prosthetics, neural interfaces, and dexterous manipulation.

EMG Pattern Recognition

Studies using the Revo series for real-time EMG-to-grip classification. Researchers have achieved 95%+ accuracy on 6-grip classification tasks using the 8-channel armband.

Prosthetic Control

Clinical studies on upper-limb amputee rehabilitation using the Revo II. The human-scale kinematics and lightweight design make it suitable for daily-wear prosthetics research.

Robot Grasping

Use the Revo II as a robot end-effector for tabletop grasping benchmarks. The 6-DOF actuation handles cylindrical, spherical, and tip grasps within the NIST grasp taxonomy.
